Mallorca is an island of contrasts: rugged mountains descend to meet delightful coves and beaches; tiny, rural hamlets dot landscapes of olive, almond and citrus groves.
If you hire a car, one of the most scenic drives is to Deià from Palma, passing Valldemossa and enjoying mountain views on one side and sea vistas on the other.
The 35km Soller-Lluc road is also dramatic, as it leads you past soaring cliffs and gnarled peaks to reach the remote Lluc monastery.
Palma, the island’s capital, is cosmopolitan yet compact enough to explore on foot. Visit the wide bay with its array of yachts, fish restaurants and night spots, or admire the majestic cathedral.
Shoppers should head for Avenida Jaime III to find the most beautiful shoe shops and boutiques. Look out also for shops selling locally blown glassware, olive wood crafts and fabrics in the local lengua design, or visit the central market in Plaza Olivar to be amazed by the mounds of colourful, fresh produce.
